The opening weekend of the Macau Poker Cup 22 (MPC22) drew 740 players and awarded more than HK$2.3 million ($295,000 USD) in the first three of the 16 official Asia Player of the Year events on the 17-day schedule. That included HK$359,282 ($46,326 USD) that went to Hong Kong's Eric Fung for winning the coveted Baby Dragon.
'It's a solid start and the numbers are up on the previous Macau Poker Cup,' said recently named APPT Tournament Director Rex Cheong. 'Things will really ramp up this week as we approach the Red Dragon main event next Saturday.'
The MPC22, which is running now through March 15 at PokerStars LIVE Macau, kicked off with a HK$2,000 No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack, which attracted 268 players and saw Chih-hsin Hsiao of Chinese Taipei take home the HK$111,100 first-place prize.
A day later, the HK$6,000 buy-in Baby Drago HK$1,000,000 Guarantee took place and saw 289 players take to the felt, which created a prize pool of HK$1,513,782. Of those, just 47 made it through to Day 2 including Taiwan's James Chen, Japan's Masato Yokosawa, and Sweden's Mikael Rosen, all who finished among the chip leaders.
All three made the final table but Yokosawa and Rosen bowed out in sixth and seventh place, respectively, while Chen made it all the way to heads-up play against Fung, who began Day 2 as one of the short stacks but had everything go his way.
