Whether you're cutting a new window in your fiberglass door, adding a small door for your pet or taking off some of the height, cutting a fiberglass door is a quick process. Fiberglass doors are low maintenance and friendly to the environment by reducing the number of trees needed to make wood doors. Instead of replacing your door with an expensive new one that meets your needs, cut it with your jigsaw.
1
Remove your door from the frame by tapping out the hinge pins with a hammer and narrow screwdriver. Take the door outside and place it on a work table or across two saw horses.
2
Measure the area you want to cut on your fiberglass door. If you're installing a mail slot, dog door or glass light panel, measure those items first, then transfer the measurements to your door. Draw the outline of the cut with a permanent marker and a straight edge.
3
Center masking tape over the marker lines you drew. Cover each line and corner with the tape. Fiberglass doors are made of glass fibers -- as the name implies -- and the tape helps hold the cut edges of the door together as you cut.
4
Put on your respirator or safety mask and goggles. Cutting the fiberglass door releases tiny pieces of glass into the air, and you don't want these pieces to get into your eyes or your lungs.
5
Drill a hole in each corner if you're cutting a shape out of the inside of the door. The hole should be larger than your jigsaw blade, so compare your drill bits to your blade to find a larger one before drilling. If you're cutting a few inches off the height, there's no need to drill into the door first.
6
Set your jigsaw blade square to ensure a straight cut. The blade should have a fine edge; the more abrasive the blade, the more jagged the cut on your door. A fine-edged blade takes a little longer to make the cut, but the edge is smoother. Cut through the masking tape and the door using your jigsaw, starting in a drilled hole in the corner and following the lines of the permanent marker that shows through the tape. The holes in each corner give you space to turn your jigsaw blade to the next line. If you're shortening the door, start at one edge and saw straight across your line of tape.

Remove the masking tape. File the cut edges of the door with a fine-grain file. File using a downward stroke to keep the edge smooth; filing upward can loosen fibers and create a ragged edge.
